Political Media Influence On Political Communication

The countdown is on. The United States is less than a year away from its next presidential election. There are frontrunners and drop-outs on both sides. News of the candidates dominate the headlines. There’s no incumbent so the field is wide open. For Americans, it is time to evaluate the contenders and start picking sides. These sides will be debated in the news, workplaces, restaurants and living rooms across the country. Each side will have their facts and opinions. Does political communication influence the debate from all sides and can political communication influence individuals to choose one candidate over another? This paper seeks to find out if campaigns should target voters of another party and if their beliefs can be changed with political communication. In presidential election years, there are the firm Democrat and Republican camps – those who will vote along party lines regardless of who is running. Then there are the swing voters – those who are just looking for the candidate who they feel will benefit them the most. In-between lies the hardest voter to target – the registered Republic or Democrat who just needs a little nudge to vote the other way, Each side believes this type of voter just needs to hear the facts, see the figures, and then make the right decision.
